Exeter police issue warning to shoppers over businesses that could be mistaken for a charity

Exeter police officers have expressed concern about businesses that are operating in the city centre who to the normal shopper would appear to be a charity. Officers said it has become an increasing concern on High Streets throughout Devon and it is an issue they are seeing more frequently in Exeter. They said on closer inspection it would appear that the person believed to be a charity worker may in fact be working for a limited company, where only a very small amount of funds would actually be used to support vulnerable people. PC Mark Arthurs, currently part of the Exeter city centre beat team, said: "We know that lots of legitimate charity workers undertake valuable fundraising work on our high streets but we are asking that before you put money in a bucket; check the charity workers ID badge, ask them what their charity number is and who they are raising funds for. "You may be approached by someone who asks you to buy a leaflet or periodical to help raise funds for the vulnerable. Before you offer money just take a moment to check whether they are in fact a charity. "It is just a case of taking that extra moment to ensure that your hard earned money is going to the cause you want it to."
