Swimmers at Exeter's Riverside Leisure Centre pool had to take to the car park in their costumes after the building was evacuated today. (Monday)
Fire crews from the city's Danes Castle station went to the centre off Cowick Street after a call reporting a possible smell of gas in the basement and lift shaft.
Fire crews using a gas detector confirmed an unidentified leak and light smoke fogging in the lift shaft.
Fire crews confirmed a leak of hydraulic oil from lift equipment.
They isolated the lift equipment to make it safe using small tools.
The centre was said to be "quite busy" at the time and the building was evacuated for a short time as a precuation.
One witness said: "People were out in their 'cozzies' but luckily the weather was sunny so that was a saving grace."
