A 60-year-old Tiverton man who sexually assaulted a female worker who went to his home has been given a suspended jail sentence. Peter Gomm, of Bridewell Court, St Andrew Street, Tiverton, was convicted after a trial of intentionally touching the woman and that the touching was sexual and she did not consent to it. Exeter magistrates heard the assault happened when the woman went to his home one day last October and the magistrates ruled that Gomm 'persisted with unwanted attention' towards the victim who was carrying out her job in the flat. Gomm was jailed for 12 weeks, suspended for two years, and placed on the Sex Offenders' register for seven years. He was not ordered to pay any compensation to the victim but must pay £410 court costs. The court was told that Gomm and his partner will now be evicted from the flat. His lawyer Rob Jacobs said: "There was a misunderstanding between him and the lady. He was over friendly with her. It was touching not groping. "He was greatly shocked when this complaint to police arose. There is no suggestion he has behaved inappropriately with other people."
