The manager of one of Exeter's oldest stores has said it is the 'end of an era' – as he prepares to close its doors for the final time. Lugets of Exeter, the city's oldest gentlemen's outfitters and tailors, will shut for the final time next month. The family-run business, located on Cathedral Yard, confirmed its last day of trading will be Saturday March 21. It has amassed an exceptional reputation over its 200 years of trading, for providing its customers with a combination of fine craftsmanship and excellent service. Manager Paul Grant blamed overheads, business rates and the internet on the impending closure. He said: "It's the end of an era. It's a shame. There's still a terrific demand for what we have been selling, but it's a sign of the times, I'm afraid. The independents just cannot afford to operate. "The birth of the internet has also affected trade. We tried to sell over the internet, but it just hasn't worked because clothing is so individual; we have fabrics you have to feel and touch. I don't think the internet works with clothing." He predicted, if Lugets did continue, it would be in a very different way. "In the future, there is a possibility of Lugets carrying on its name, "he said. "Members of staff might set up on their own, maybe continuing the made-to-measure service and the hire wear service; the slightly more personal, individual service. Again, the problem is trying to find a retail premise that a private individual can afford." Mr Grant admitted he has no idea who will take over their premises. "I just hope it isn't another coffee or clothing shop!" he said. Despite the impending closure of his own store, Mr Grant has given his backing to the Exeter's £12.8m Roman Bath vision. He said: "I'm all for it. I think it will be great for the city, but it's a shame we have to close down. There will be a lot of upheaval for a year or two, which could affect trade badly, but I think, in the long term, it's got to be good for the city. Exeter is an up and coming city – I think it's a great idea and it will be booming." Lugets will have discounts on all its stock and will be hosting a sale in the lead up to its last day of business.
