Cullompton's fight to dodge relegation takes them to Thornbury this Saturday in a potentially crucial game. It's six seasons since Cully stormed into South West One as champions with a perfect record of played 22, won 22. Cully have only finished in the top half of the table once in the last four seasons and spent most of last term trying to stay clear of the drop. The situation is more serious this season as Cully are rock bottom with 11 points to find somehow to reach safety. The side they have to get ahead of is Thornbury, so Cully are in big trouble if they lose. "We are in a challenging place and it is going to be a big ask to get out of it," said coach Chris Wall. "But there is no way we are going to give up and if we repeat some of the qualities we showed against Newton Abbot, it's a game we can win." Wall said Newton were always overwhelming favourites to win last Saturday's Devon KO Cup semi-final, but the 57-7 scoreline did not tell the whole story. "You looked at the quality of Newton Abbot's side and the amount of Championship experience in it as well as the budget they have and it was hard to see us winning," said Wall. "What I wanted to see was pride in the shirt and us asking Newton Abbot some difficult questions. I felt we achieved both. "Newton were quicker than us outside and they found gaps to exploit. We caused them problems at scrum-time though and were forcing them into giving away penalties. "At no stage did we give up and that's the sort of spirit we are going to need to see us through." Cullompton's try was scored by Andy Hayball and converted by Adam Pearce.
