Rugby, Western Counties West: Simon Morrell wants Teignmouth to be ready for promotion

Teignmouth are planning for South West One next season – even though they have not won promotion yet. If league bosses go through with a 50-point deduction on leaders University of Exeter for fielding ineligible players, second-placed Teignmouth will be favourites for automatic promotion. An appeal panel is being assembled to hear the University's argument against the punishment and once all parties have agreed on the membership the case will be heard. Either way, coach Simon Morrell – who takes his side to St Ives on Saturday – wants his side to be ready just in case. "We need to make sure we are set up right for South West One for whenever we get there, this year or next," said Morrell. "Our set-piece needs work as it isn't ready for South West One yet, and we have to accept we may be living off scraps to start with. "With that in mind we need to work on our kick returns, broken-field play and turnover attacks. "Our kicking game in the middle third of the field was the worst in our division at the start of the season and that still needs work." Morrell said far from being in limbo while the league deliberates on the University of Exeter issue, the mood in the camp is relaxed. "Either way we are in a strong position and even have the freedom to lose a game, not that we want to," said Morrell. "It is quite liberating not to be under that sort of pressure." The Teigns overcame Sidmouth 36-7 last time out, running away with the game in the second half. Sidmouth were only 7-3 up at half-time, with Joe Simmonds' penalty Teignmouth's only points. After the break there were tries for Neil Johns, Peter Parsons, James Wood, Ben Parrott and Will Sowden. Simmonds kicked four conversions. St Ives were unable to get a full team out against Exeter University on Saturday. The Hakes travelled anyway – minus a full front row – and lost a glorified training game 67-7. "It is not the first time they have travelled short this season, which they are doing hoping it will help keep them up by avoiding five-point deductions for crying off," said Morrell. "I do know St Ives at home are a different proposition because of better availability and we have to be aware of that." Sowden, Johns, Rob Parsons and prop Steve Smith are not travelling to Cornwall. In come Mike Saxton, Dan Force, Arron Kelly and Sam Fellows. Exeter University are at home to bottom-of-the-table Tavistock this Saturday.Okehampton go to Kingsbridge on the verge of a fixture backlog after beating Penryn 21-13 in the RFU Intermediate Cup. Okes now have to find a date to play Coney Hill – and fit in rearranged games against Wadebridge and Tavistock. Penyrn pressed Okes all the way to the end last Saturday and it took an injury-time try to settle matters. Tries by Gareth Evans and Nicky Martin, both converted by Gary Sizmur, had Okes 14-3 up. Penryn got back to 14-13 to set up a grandstand finish. Okehampton broke away in their own 22 and Rob Fishleigh ran in for Sizmur to convert.Sidmouth are away to Wadebridge this Saturday looking for a league double. "We beat them comfortably (20-5) at our place, but at their place they are a different breed," warned Beavis. Despite last Saturday's 36-7 loss to Teignmouth, Beavis is not reading too much into it. "The Teignmouth game isn't one to worry about too much, other than we weren't done any favours by the margin. It should have been a bit closer. "You have to be realistic though. They have spent the past couple of years putting together a side to push for promotion and that's what they are doing." Rory O'Brien ran down his own chip ahead to claim Sidmouth's only try. Dan Retter converted.Tiverton head coach Martin Oxland says they are looking forward to Saturday's trip to Torquay after making the Devon Intermediate Cup semi-finals. Tiverton beat lower-league OPM 38-10 last weekend, and Oxland thinks the cup win will have lifted the players after a 17-13 loss to second-placed Teignmouth the weekend before. "We're looking forward to it. Saturday's result gives us a bit of confidence after the Teignmouth result," said Oxland. "We're away from home again but we'll be looking to continue with a positive performance." Tiverton led 21-0 after centre Tom Heard dotted down and Jimmy Atkins converted. AdamWillows went through under the sticks and so did Ollie King, with Atkins converting both. The hosts claimed a try on the counter-attack before the break and also made a good game of it early in the second half. However, Tivvy upped the pace again in the final quarter to score three more tries. Willows sold a dummy on the 22 and went under the posts for his second score, which Atkins converted. Captain-for-the-day Matt Hague – who could be the club's youngest ever skipper at 21 – drove over from close range after Heard's break and with a few minutes remaining winger Euan Howells finished off a move in the corner. Tiverton are due to travel to either Teignmouth or Sidmouth in the cup semi-finals.
