Athletics: Jo Pavey collects top award at Exeter Harriers presentation night

EXETER HARRIERS Exeter Harriers held their annual presentation night, with Jo Pavey handing out the awards and also winning one herself. The club member collected the Ken Trickey Memorial Cup for the outstanding club athlete of the year following her gold medal success at the European Championships and bronze at the Commonwealth Games. The annual services to Exeter Harriers shield went to Dave Robinson, who has tirelessly worked for the club, particularly over the last year, in various roles. "The management of the club last year fell to very few, and Dave took on more and more to keep the club running," said club chairman Irene Brown. "He has been involved in the management of the club, membership secretary, finance director – quite a technical challenge – and continues with the running of the monthly Exeter open meetings and the women's team management." The lifetime achievement award went to Maurice Ault, recognising his service to athletics over a significant number of years. Ault said: "During my 28 years in athletics I think I have done just about every task in the sport that has been my passion and absorbing interest throughout those years. I was also a serious road, cross-country and track competing athlete when I was younger. "For me to receive from Exeter Harriers this award was such a surprise and is the best way for my retirement to be marked. "To facilitate the development of young people is one of the most rewarding activities us older folk can do." Other award winners were – under-11s, male athlete of the year: Sam Mills. Female athlete of the year: Katie Chapman. Under-13s, male athlete of the year: Josh Tyler and Nathan Blatchford. Female athlete of the year: Isobel Pinsky. Sportshall, male athlete of the year: Craig Moncur. Female athlete of the year: Brooke Coldwell. South West League, male athlete of the year: Dominic Allen. Female athlete of the year: Isobel Pinsky. Commitment: Lauren Coleman. Cross-country, male athlete of the year: Matt Dowell. Female athlete of the year: Lauren Coleman. Junior volunteer awards: Zoe Kuyken, Ruby Davies, Jack Moncur. Centenary Cup (thrower of the year): Dominic Allen. Women's team, junior athlete of the year: Meghan Whittaker. Senior athlete of the year: Rebecca Chapman. Commitment: Lucy Smith. Men's team, junior athlete of the year: Matt Dowell. Senior athlete of the year: Dave Dawson. Commitment: Ollie Berry Exeter Harriers have 20 athletes selected to represent Devon at the South West Schools Cross-Country Championships in Chippenham on February 7. Eliot Moran won the junior boys' title at the Devon Schools Cross-Country Championships, with Sam Pyne fourth. In the minor boys' race, Jonny Livingstone was third and Will Penney eighth. Finn McLear was runner-up in the inter boys' race, with Owen Coldwell ninth and Kyle Hartnell 11th. Shaun Johnson and Patrick Livingstone were fourth and fifth respectively in the senior boys' race, with Matt Dowell ninth and Matt Penney 12th. Brooke Coldwell finished fourth in the minor girls' race and Marnie Broomby was 11th. In the junior girls' race, Anna Downs was second, Eleanor Brandon third, Issie Beech sixth and Runa Manby 10th. The inter girls also had four top-10 finishers. Maddie Roche was second, Florence Livingstone fourth, Josie Crosby sixth and Lauren Coleman seventh. Katie Olding finished fourth for the senior girls and Zoe Kuyken sixth. EXETER HALF MARATHON Following the closure of Ironbridge Runner and Ironbridge Runner Events, Exeter City's football in the community team have taken over the running of the Exeter half marathon, along with the Granite Way 10 and 20-mile events in March. Everything is going ahead with the half marathon as previously advised on the weekend of February 14 and 15, and race numbers and final instructions will be sent out to entrants at the beginning of February.
