A city high street is set to undergo "essential" work to address persistent problems with drainage and sinking.

Work to install new gullies and pipework in Exeter's High Street will start on January 16 along the road from Queen Street to Broadgate.

Despite previous work to address problems, the existing systems is failing to adequately handle surface water, causing further damage to the road's substructure.

John Harvey, left, Exeter City Centre manager, said the city centre will remain open throughout the works, scheduled to finish on March 28.

Mr Harvey said: "These street works are essential and, although no-one ever likes such work, the work is needed to put right a problem with its roots back in the city's post-war reconstruction."

South West Highways will initially work overnight to avoid disruption in the day.

Pedestrian access will be maintained and buses will run with a short diversion.
