Abandoned hospital wards, crumbling apartment blocks and a slowly rusting ferris wheel are just some of the eerie scenes featured in new aerial footage of Chernobyl. Created by Devon-based documentary maker, Danny Cooke, the Postcards from Pripyat video takes viewers on a tour of the Ukrainian city which has been deserted for almost 30 years since the explosion at the nearby nuclear power plant. The haunting film shows offices, parks and homes which were once home to 50,000 people, but whose sole occupants now are the trees and bushes which have grown up in their absence. Mr Cooke described it as "one of the most interesting and dangerous" projects he had ever undertake. And it was all made possible through the use of two cameras, a Geiger counter, and a drone. "There was something serene, yet highly disturbing about this place," he said. "Time has stood still and there are memories of past happenings floating around us. "The disaster had an effect on so many people and caused so much distress hundreds of miles away. "I can't imagine how terrifying it would have been for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens who were forced to evacuate." Officials evacuated the city three days after the reactor blew up at the nearby Chernobyl power plant, although a handful of residents refused to leave. Scientists say the area will not be safe to live in for another 20,000 years. But tourists can obtain day passes, and workers who are rebuilding parts of the site are allowed in for limited hours only each month. Mr Cooke said the incident even impacted his family, who were living in Italy at the time: "The Italian police went round and threw away all the local produce. My mother rushed out to purchase as much tinned milk as possible." The full video can be found at www.dannycooke.co.uk.
