With the finest Decorated Gothic cathedral in England, an award-winning Royal Albert Memorial Museum, and an impressive arts scene – our city is the undisputed regional capital for culture. Now, things have got even better, as Exeter has emerged as one of the most cultured cities in the UK – beating Plymouth, Bristol and even London. The city was ranked seventh out of 50 cities with populations over 50,000, according to analysis by a data team at the Manchester Evening News. All 50 cities were ranked according to number of museums and fine dining restaurants per 100,000 people as well as other cultural venues including museums, theatres and Grade I listed buildings. Top of the list was Oxford, closely followed by Cambridge, while Norwich came in at third place. The capital city – despite a wealth of museums and theatres – only finished in 33rd place as economic performance was not taken into account. Perhaps surprisingly, Hull, the future UK Capital of Culture finished in a disappointing 39th place. The ten most cultural cities in Britain with a population over 50,000: 1. Oxford 2. Cambridge 3.
