A MOTORIST has been charged with causing the death of a cyclist by careless driving. Matthew Hill, aged 28, is facing a trial at Plymouth Crown Court. He has denied causing the death of Tom Brady by driving without due care and attention on the old A30 at Sprytown Cross near Lifton in West Devon. Hill is said to have been at the wheel of a Citroen Saxo at the time of the accident on August 14 last year. Hill, from the village of Tregada near Launceston, has previously pleaded not guilty before city magistrates. He did not appear at the latest hearing in the senior court. Recorder John Williams set down directions for the service of evidence pending a trial. Hill is expected to appear at the Crown Court on October 13 to formally enter a plea before a judge. Police said at the time that Mr Brady was cycling when he was involved in an accident with the Saxo at about 4pm that day. The father-of-three, aged 41, from Lifton, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hill was treated by ambulance crews at the scene and then released. The road was closed for eight hours while a specialist forensic investigation of the scene was carried out. Mr Brady's family later paid tribute to him, saying he was "a loving husband, son, brother and father to three young children." The statement continued: "Not only was he a hard working and considerate person, he was always ready to lend a hand, cheerful, intelligent, with lots of interests, with a great sense of humour. He will be greatly missed and is totally irreplaceable."
