After beating Tiverton last weekend, Crediton's Bernie Blatchford is looking for an even better display against Okehampton this Saturday. Mark Lee's late try helped Kirton to a 31-29 success at Coronation Field in a match played over three 30-minute periods. That came despite trailing 17-7 at one stage against the team from the higher division. With Okehampton also competing in Western Counties West, the Blagdon outfit should get another good test this time out as they finalise their pre-season preparations. And coaching co-ordinator Blatchford is looking for an improved performance from his players. "It was very pleasing," Blatchford said of the win against Tiverton. "We've obviously got things to work on but we've had a good pre-season and the first game is something you need to get up and running. "Tiverton and us both had a few people missing but the young lads who came in for us did really well, and we're really pleased with how they played. "We've got a friendly with Okehampton this weekend and we'll be looking to get some improvement into that." Crediton also won 44-12 in a match played between the clubs' second/third teams at the same time and Blatchford said the majority of the squads in action in both matches did well. "You need the intensity of matches. You can train all you want but you need matches to get match fitness and the added pressure of match situations," he said. "It was good for the players and as a group of players, as firsts and seconds, they all shaped up very well, so we were very pleased." Tiverton conclude their preparations for their return to Western Counties West when they host Exmouth on Friday evening (7.15pm). Cullompton warmed up for the new season with a 22-5 win against Sidmouth. Head coach Chris Wall, whose side played Wiveliscombe in their final pre-season outing on Tuesday evening, was pleased with the way his players went about their task. He said: "I was pretty pleased. We scored some good tries and our defensive patterns were good, although it was a little disappointing to concede at the end. "Unfortunately we picked up a couple of injuries. Pete Nockles, who has just returned to the club after travelling, hurt his knee, the same one that had an ACL reconstruction before he went away, but hopefully it will not be too serious." Cully may still arrange a training game next week.
