A FATHER and organ donor campaigner from Exmouth has signed-up his 2,500th person to the organ donor register.
Councillor Steve Gazzard lost his daughter Sarah Wright, 36, to lung disease in November 2012. In July of that year Cllr Gazzard and Sarah launched a campaign to raise awareness of the need for people to sign the organ donor register to give life after death. After tireless sign-up events in Exmouth, the target stands at an incredible 2,508.
"It's amazing," he said expressing gratitude to the town crier Roger Bourgein and town mayor Councillor Bill Nash for their support. "I'm humbled that the people of Exmouth have taken Sarah's story into their hearts.
"Now we move towards the next target of 3,000. If Sarah wants to send me a message to let me know I've done enough, then I may consider stopping. But it's become a part of me."
Cllr Gazzard tragically lost his 24-year-old son Sean 10 years ago to mouth cancer.
As a memorial to his son, the family has sponsored the Exeter City match ball each year ever since, and now does the same for Sarah, as they were both avid Grecian supporters.
On Saturday, August 23, the family sponsored the ball at the 1-1 draw against York City, 10 years since the last game Sean watched Exeter play against the Brazilian Masters.
