Exeter Chiefs supporters will have a chance to see some possible stars of the future when an academy XV take on Exmouth in a pre-season friendly. The Cockles are hosting the match on Tuesday (6.45pm) as they prepare for their upcoming campaign in National Three South West. The Chiefs won last year's encounter and a young side is expected to make the trip to the Imperial Ground next week. The academy prospects played against Redruth on Tuesday this week, winning 24-0, with Sireli Naqelevuki the only senior player involved, starting on the flank as he is given a chance to show what he can do in the pack rather than in the centre. Assuming the experiment lasts more than one match, he will come up against former teammate Chris Bentley, who has already said he intends to show the Fijian star a few of the dark arts of forwards play. For Exeter boss Rob Baxter, the academy matches offer a chance for the lads on the fringes a chance to prove whether they have what it takes. "We've got a group of senior academy players who are training with us full-on and doing a lot with us so we see a lot of those guys and it's nice to see them in a match environment," he said. "What's important for me is that we involve a lot of the wider academy group who train with us in pre-season. They come in very early and do their gym session before the main squad, they train when the first team are in meetings and at this time of the year they also train in the evenings in preparation for these matches. "They work very hard to make the step up to the next level of rugby and who are desperate for that opportunity. "Last year it was fantastic because a couple of lads stood out who hadn't until shown that time that they could come through as really good academy players. Because of that we spent more time on them and they got further opportunities. "Last year the Exmouth and Launceston fixtures were very important for us, this year we've got an additional one against Redruth, and it's become a really nice time of the season." Exmouth head coach Jon Hill, himself a former Exeter player, is looking forward to a good test of his side as they gear up for the new campaign. Hill said: "It will be fantastic to once again welcome the Chiefs academy to Exmouth. "Last year's game was thoroughly entertaining, and proved to be a great pre-season game for us, played at a million miles an hour!" The Cockles are set to include new signings Ollie Rice, Jack Pyne, Isaac Dalton, Ollie Cave and Ben Hawley at some stage, along with Matt Harris and Brad Cooke, who step up from the colts. In addition, Shane Cooper, Jack Madge and Paul Morgan are returning from long-term injuries.
