Exeter City Council's Markets section has stepped in to ease fears over the closure of the Farmers' Market. A representative has said that there is no question of the market closing but added they would like to see new customers at the market. Earlier today it was announced that the Farmers' Market faces a tough future. A spokesperson for the market said: "We have a very loyal customer base for whose support we are extremely grateful, but, like the market, they're getting older and we don't seem to be attracting too many new shoppers. "The problem is that the big supermarkets are making it so easy to shop at any time, day or night, without people even having to leave their armchairs. "And without sufficient support, we'll wither and die which would impoverish the shopping 'experience', remove consumers still further from producers and mean that the 'couch potatoes' were missing out on getting out and about and meeting people in Exeter's beautiful city centre. "Exeter Farmers' Market has weathered some tough times to become a 'teenager' but we're going strong at the moment – our message would be 'use us or lose us'." The Council have now said that although the number of producers at the market fluctuates they happy with the current demand. Adding that they are always receiving applications from prospective new producers. Having trialled a number of city locations, the Market, is based currently at the junction between South Street and Fore Street and runs every Thursday from 9 am until 2 pm. Its birthday will be celebrated by a special event on Thurday, August 7 when all the stalls, including a number selling high quality local comestibles, will feature special offers and there will be a chance to win a hamper full of market
