A PLANNING application which could see a new district shopping centre built on the outskirts of Exeter has been lodged with the city council. The developers say that the so-called Moor Exchange, off Honiton Road, will feature a range of shops and services for residents and businesses. As previously revealed in the Echo, there have been talks with a number of well known names, including Marks& Spencer, next and Nando's. But all the developers will say at the moment is that the mix of outlets could include a pharmacy, newsagent, lifestyle store, clothing, phone shop, sports, opticians, bank, restaurants, post box, travel agent, café/coffee shop, gym and day nursery facilities. Located close to the Met Office, the developers say Moor Exchange will deliver a much needed district centre to the wider area, as required by the Monkerton and Hill Barton Master Plan. Martin Ridgway, managing director of developers, Consolidated Property Group, said: "These are exciting times for Exeter with so much happening locally. "Since the proposals for Moor Exchange were first announced in March this year, there has been a steady influx of quality operators interested in taking space at this development. "This demonstrates the site's attraction with so many businesses on the doorstep and up to a further 3,000 new houses being delivered within the wider area. "We had very positive feedback at the public consultation earlier this year and the momentum has been maintained. "It is stressed that Moor Exchange will not compete with the city centre or the proposed bus station scheme. For example, many of the restaurant operators who have shown an interest want to be in both the city centre and at Moor Exchange." Mr Ridgway added: "For the many thousands of people who work in the immediate area to get into town and back at lunchtime is challenging, particularly with the time pressures of work and travelling. "Similarly, local residents face similar problems but with the range of shops and services that we are proposing, it will ease the situation and will help reduce local traffic." The application is expected to be decided by early autumn and, if approved, work could start next spring with a phased opening from spring 2016.
