A shoplifter wrecked two cars and a motorhome after going out drinking to celebrate getting off with a conditional discharge. Michael Oke started drinking as soon as he walked out of the magistrates court and carried on until he took a Range Rover for a joyride just after midnight. He crashed it within yards of taking it from a driveway of a home in Newton Abbot and left a trail of destruction before ramming it into a bollard. He was three times over the limit when police found him slumped over the wheel, Exeter Crown Court was told. Oke, aged 35, is a homeless alcoholic who has previously lived in Ilfracombe and has a list of 74 previous convictions which cover 32 pages. He had been freed on a conditional discharge by Torbay Magistrates on the morning of May 22 after admitting shoplifting and was arrested some 12 hours later in Randolph Drive, Newton Abbot. Oke, previously of Rackfield Court, Ilfracombe, admitted aggravated vehicle taking and drink driving. He was jailed for 20 months and banned from driving for three years by Judge Phillip Wassall. The Judge told him:"You have a bad record and a lot of the offences relate to drinking, but there has been nothing like this before. "You were in breach of the conditional discharge and this offence was aggravated by dangerous driving and you being three times over the limit." Mr Nigel Wraith, prosecuting, said police were called to the Churchills area of Newton Abbot just after midnight on May 23 after residents reported a man trying the doors of cars and causing a disturbance. He said:"A male was heard shouting 'someone nick me' and kicking garage doors. Police arrived to find a blue Range Rover being driven in the road without lights. "They activated their blue lights and the car went into Randolph Court where it struck a Vauxhall Astra at about 25 mph launching it into the air and pushing it onto a lawn. "The car was written off. It also hit was motor caravan, which suffered an estimated £2,000 damage. The Range Rover continued down the road but hit a concrete bollard at the entrance to a footpath. "Officers found Oke slumped in the driver's seat and later gave a breath test reading of 107 microgrammes, three times the limit. "He told police later he had been discharged by magistrates the day before and had got drunk in Torquay before going to Newton Abbot to look for a place to sleep. "He explained he was an alcoholic who had no home, no licence and no insurance. He said he had little memory of what you did because he was drunk." Mr Wraith said the owner of the Range Rover had left the keys in the vehicle and he has no estimate of the damage. The Astra had only been worth £1,000 before being written off. He said Oke has 74 convictions including offences of robbery and drugs in North Devon. Oke was not represented but asked the Judge to take into consideration the contents of a pre sentence report prepared by the probation service. He said:"It has all been said in the report. I can't turn back time."
