Thousands of people are taking part in events to mark Exeter Pride 2014 today. Hundreds took part in a colourful parade through the city centre started by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Rachel Lyons, who welcomed all those on the march to the city. Cllr Lyons, accompanied by mace sergeants and fellow councillor, Margaret Clark then took part in the parade. Taking part in this year's march was 16-year-old Eleisha Milverton from Exeter. Eleisha said: "Taking part this year is very important to me. Last year I hadn't come out but this year I have." She was accompanied by 15-year-old Sofie Emerson who had taken part last year. Sofie said: "There is definitely more people here this year." The parade is the biggest celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in the region. Organisers say it will be the biggest event to date, with more than 2,000 people expected to take part in the parade in Exeter's High Street and attend activities after the parade at Exeter Phoenix in Gandy Street. Community groups, firefighters, police, students, trade union groups and individuals will be among those taking part in the parade. Events and activities at Exeter Phoenix will be family-friendly, and include activities for children, young people and adults.
