THERE was a big thank you for volunteers who contributed thousands of hours of work to the Children's Centre at Beacon Heath.

The volunteers came together to receive certificates from city councillor Ian Martin.

Between June 2011 and December 2012 volunteers gave a total of 5,855 hours to the centre and to the children.

SUGGESTIONS by Heavitree Community Association that all the traffic lights in Fore Street should be synchronised do not appear popular with Devon County Council.

The association believes traffic backs up because the toucan crossing lights outside the Quo Vadis restaurant change almost on demand.

However, a spokesman for the county council has told the Echo: "Heavitree Road is one of busiest routes into the city. We have to balance the needs of the traffic with that of pedestrians.

"In Heavitree, there is a crossing at North Street as part of the signalled junction. Pedestrians have to wait at this crossing to reduce the impact of the crossing on traffic flow. In contrast the stand alone crossing outside Quo Vadis has far less impact on traffic flow, and so is more responsive to pedestrians."

Pedestrians in Fore Street are becoming increasingly irate about cyclists on the pavement.

City ward councillor Tyna Crow said: "Older people in particular have a problem with this as they can't hear people cycling up behind them. They speak of cyclists whizzing so there is a problem with speed and the fact that they are coming up behind people and scaring them because they haven't heard them.

"The problem is the cyclists have little regard that they are breaking the rules."

PC Gary Wall, neighbourhood beat manager, who has advised cyclists of the error of their ways on several occasions, said: "The issue is confusing in terms of people's general knowledge on where they can and cannot ride. The council has attempted to resolve this by creating dual cycling paths/pedestrian walkways but most people of all ages when questioned are unaware where they can and cannot ride. I believe the confusion arises when they see some footpaths designated and others not."
