A Devon agricultural college has been praised for "changing and improving lives" in its first ever Ofsted inspection.

Bicton College became the first land-based college in the country to be inspected under new rules meaning officers can arrive with just a day's notice.

The college was officially rated 'good' in all categories of the inspection, which noted its "harmonious and purposeful" environment for learning.

Inspectors commented on the quality of teaching, leadership and management, and took the unusual step of arranging a meeting with all staff to deliver the feedback.

They said the principal and senior managers had high expectations for the continued success of the college and for its place within the learning community in Devon.

Principal David Henley said: "This is another confirmation of the massive steps that this college has taken in the last three years. I am so pleased for our staff, the Governors, our partners, and not least the schools and employers we so closely work with.

"Most of all I am delighted for our students and their parents who know what we deliver here is high quality, but they now have the official recognition to prove it".

The inspection report highlighted the college's importance as an agricultural centre in the region.

Jo Wymer, chair of governors, acknowledged the report made "excellent reading" for the college.

Jane Townsend, deputy principal for the curriculum, said: "Everything we do is for our students and so I was delighted that this inspection has picked up some really important features of our provision at Bicton."

Tim Jones, chairman of SW Local Enterprise Partnership, said: "The results of this important inspection speak volumes for the excellent standards now available at Bicton. They also send a strong message nationally as to the quality of education provision within our area. This is of huge importance to the business community and also in sending the right messages to inward investors."

Ian Munro, regional director of the SW Association of Colleges, said: "The determination and commitment of governors, leadership team and staff to establish a continuous improvement culture where the student experience is central to everything that the college does has now been recognised by Ofsted and we are absolutely delighted for everyone involved."

Howard Petch CBE, board member of the Commission for Rural Communities, said: "Thanks to the leadership, commitment and professionalism of staff at Bicton, Devon now has the quality and scope of land based provision consistent with its importance to the county. All concerned are to be congratulated and supported in their aspirations for the future."
