AN elderly man is hospital with serious head injuries after a seven vehicle collision on Haldon Hill yesterday evening.
Devon and Cornwall police are appealing for witnesses to the collision which happened just before 6pm on the Exeter-bound carriageway.
Five casualties were taken to the RD&E Hospital, Exeter while the elderly man, a 78-year-old from Dobwalls who had to be cut free by fire crews, was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police said: "A black BMW travelling in the direction of the M5 was in collision with a blue Fiat Punto, a white Ford Fiesta and a white Audi A3 which were all stationary in a queue.
"The BMW travelled further along the road on the grass verge next to the crash barrier and then re-joined the carriageway when it collided with a Ford Ka, Volkswagen Golf and a Peugeot which were also stationary."
The driver of the BMW was among those taken to the RD&E.
Following the collision the road was closed for seven hours while police remained on the scene.
Witnesses are asked to contact the police on 101 and quote log number 583.
