A man involved in a crash on the A38 near Exeter today was rescued by the fire service after his vehicle hit a tree and he became trapped inside.
Emergency services were called to Haldon Hill near the racecourse at 8.57am following reports of an accident involved a single vehicle coming down the hill towards the city.
A police spokesman said: "It appears a vehicle has come down the hill just past the racecourse and gone into the forest."
Fire engines from Exeter's Middlemoor and Danes Castle, along with a heavy rescue vehicle from Middlemoor, were sent to the scene.
Crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to attempt to release the man, who was finally freed using specialist cutting equipment and small tools.
The main road was closed in both directions while the air ambulance took the injured motorist to hospital in Plymouth.
The southbound carriageway has since re-opened, but the opposite side was likely to remain closed for several hours.
Drivers were warned to expect 'significant delays'.
Traffic is currently said to be 'severe', with vehicles travelling 'very slowly' towards the city.
Horrific accident on Haldon Hill this morning. If you are stuck in traffic say your prayers for the man airlifted to hospital this morning.
