Residents make do and mend

Sanctuary Care residents have rolled up their sleeves to get creative by taking inspiration from the WWII 'make do and mend' era.

Along with staff, family and friends, residents at Greenslades Nursing Home on Willeys Avenue came together with local textile artist Sally Light to share fond memories, handle beautiful fabrics and old-fashioned rug-making tools.

The revival of the 1930-40's pastime saw residents and visitors sampling hands-on demonstrations of 'rag rug' techniques including 'hooky', 'proddy' and 'shirring' methods. Residents even dusted off the tools themselves and had a go themselves.

During the fabric-busting event the residents learnt handy tips and reminisced about their childhood era.

Manager at the Sanctuary Care home, Tselane Selokama, said: "The 'rag rug ' workshop will be an exciting one, we've never hosted an event quote like this in our home - and we've hosted countless of events!

"Our residents were looking forward to Sally's visit and rewinding the clock back to the 'make do and mend' era, as it was the pastime that many of them grew up in."

Sally, textile artist and found of the rag rug project, added: "It's fantastic to be invited to Greenslades, I visit many residential homes and Memory Cafes throughout the region and I'm always amazed at the enthusiastic response I receive!

"It's a craft many people from the older generation have vivid memories of and the sharing of tips and stories are always really interesting."
