An angry disc jockey caused almost £1,500 damage in a Ballroom Blitz after his £100,000 record collection was stolen from outside his gig. Craig Smith had only DJed once at the Monkey Suit bar in Exeter, Devon when his record collection which had travelled the world with him, was taken by men in uniform who he thought were military servicemen. Smith, 37, had been sacked by the bar after a row but one evening in November went to the city centre bar and tried to take his drink outside. A court heard the staff refused to let him do that but he appeared 'calm and in a good mood', said prosecutor Lyndsey Baker. She said staff were concerned what he would do and Smith went into the toilets and smashed fittings and a pipe so that water was ankle deep on the floor. He caused £1,483 to some doors, a radiator, and a picture frame which he smashed over his OWN head. In police interview he admitted causing damage but could not recall smashing up the toilets but CCTV saw him in that area. Defence lawyer Galina Labworth said the married father of two was a plumber and part time DJ but had only played at the venue once. She said:"When he was taking his equipment and records out of the premises he left his records for a short period of time. They were stolen from outside the Monkey Suit." She said the collection was worth £100,000 and Smith's 'most treasured possession' which he taken to Russia and 'all over the world'. Smith said CCTV showed men in uniform who may been responsible but he felt the bar were not supportive of his efforts to find the stolen collection. She said afterwards Smith suffered a breakdown and his marriage split up and he has been left without a job and no money. Smith, of Shaftsbury Road, Exeter, admitted criminal damage at Exeter magistrates court. District Judge Stephen Nicholls gave him a two year conditional discharge but ordered he pay the bar compensation for the damage he caused.
