A Devon pensioner has been banned from driving after crashing into an oncoming car when he fell asleep at the wheel. Lionel Solly, 75, from Woolacombe, pleaded guilty at North Devon Magistrates' Court on January 9 to driving without due care and attention and failing to stop after an accident. The court heard he collided with an oncoming car on the A361 between Barnstaple and Tiverton on 22 July 2014. He had flown back from a holiday in Florida the night before and gone to his son's home in Bristol to eat and rest before setting off for Woolacombe. But he fell asleep at the wheel and "drifted into the oncoming lane" according to prosecutor Karen Ball. She said he struck the other car with a glancing blow which showered broken glass on to its driver and passenger when it broke the driver's window. Mrs Ball said the passenger, who had been going to collect her children, said she had experienced anxiety and "flashbacks of the zombie-like man driving towards us" since the collision. Lawrence Overend, for the defence, said Solly's driving licence had been clean since he passed his test more than 50 years ago. "He said he was unaware that he had hit another vehicle," Mr Overend added. "He thought he hit a post." Solly was found by police at his home in Woolacombe, having driven there after the accident without stopping. He was fined £500 and disqualified from driving for six weeks. But he will not be able to legally drive until he passes a standard driving test again.
