A man has been talked down from an Exeter footbridge following a six-hour police incident today that caused traffic chaos in the city.
The man, aged in his 60s from the Exeter area, was spotted by a member of the public at 9.10am on the wrong side of the railings on Baker Bridge by Sandy Park rugby stadium.
Police closed the A379 in both directions between the Sandygate roundabout and the Old Rydon Lane junction following concerns for the man's welfare.
Negotiators were called to assist the situation as well as the fire and ambulance services.
The man eventually moved to the right side of the bridge railings at 3.22pm, and he was taken to a 'place of safety'.
A police spokesman confirmed the individual was "negotiated safety" off the bridge, and then taken to a "place of safety".
They said: "The incident was quite a lengthy one, but fortunately it's been resolved safely. Police, fire and ambulance were all there. It was a bit of cavalry."
Traffic was diverted away from the scene, causing disruption elsewhere notably around the Middlemoor roundabout.
Still major traffic problems around Sandygate and Rydon Lane areas in #Exeter due to ongoing police incident. Please avoid area if you can.
