A drunk driver was seen by police reversing back down a slip road on to the M5 at six o'clock in the morning.
Stephen Maunder came to a halt on a grass verge by J27 of the M-way in Devon, a court was told.
Police breath tested the 26 year old and he blew nearly twice the legal drink drive limit.
Officers also found he had a small amount of cocaine on him when they searched him later.
Yesterday Maunder, of Hay Webb Close, Exeter, Devon, admitted drink driving and possessing a class A drug.
He told District Judge Stephen Nicholls:"I sincerely apologise, you won't see me again sir."
At Exeter magistrates court Maunder was fined a total of £355 and banned from driving for 12 months.
