Exeter City's Matt Grimes is on the verge of joining Premier League Swansea City in a deal worth £1.75m.
Echo Sport understands that the 19-year-old midfielder is set to put pen to paper on a contract to take him to the Liberty Stadium having gone to South Wales on Wednesday to complete a medical.
Two other Premier League clubs are thought to be chasing his signature, with Liverpool and Sunderland having sent scouts to watch the player.
However, the Swans are in pole position to tie up a deal in the next 48 hours, with the January transfer window officially opening at 12am on Saturday.
The deal to take Grimes to South Wales is set to break City's record transfer sale of £500,000 – when Martin Phillips moved from St James's Park to Manchester City in 1995.
Grimes, who has played more than 50 games for City, was not in the 18-man Exeter squad that lost 4-1 away at Wimbledon on Sunday, with the official club line being that he was too ill to travel.
However, he is expected to go straight into the Swans' first team squad if a deal is completed in the next couple of days and could feature in the Premier League this season.
Grimes has been attracting a lot of attention with his performances for City, having made his way into the starting XI in August 2013 and won the supporters' player of the year trophy in his first season as a professional.
He has gone onto score five goals for the Grecians and has represented England at under-20s level.
City issued a statement before Christmas to say that no deal had yet been done to take Grimes away from St James's Park, but that it was possible one or more of their young players could be transferred in January.
The statement was issued to tell supporters how the club would spend any incoming transfer funds.
The club said they would use the money to pay off any outstanding loans, upgrade the club's youth academy and improve the first team playing squad over a three, or more, year period.
