Police and health officials have advised party-goers in the Devon to "drink safely" in order to make the most of their New Year's eve celebrations. For many Westcountry residents, December 31 traditionally marks the end of the festive season and its various indulgences as they prepare to return to work and a "healthier" lifestyle. Exeter and Exmouth are traditionally popular venues among revellers with the pubs and clubs in both locations expected to be packed out this evening. But with hundreds of revellers planning to see 2015 in with a bang, Devon and Cornwall Police has said it hopes people will nevertheless act responsibly "to make sure everyone has a great evening". "We want people to go out and enjoy their night," said Superintendent John Green. "But there are always going to be one of two problems caused by people who have had too much to drink. "Over the last few years we have seen the number of people we have had to take into custody fall, with more people going out to have a fun night rather than just get drunk. "This year, we hope people will make the effort to drink responsibly and to stay with their groups. However, there will be a police presence on the streets to help if needed and make sure the public is safe." Earlier this month, the force launched its #RU2Drunk campaign in partnership with venues in the South Devon town of Torquay. The initiative was aimed at reducing alcohol-induced crime in the town over the festive period and has seen hundreds of people breathalysed by door stewards to check whether they are "too drunk" to gain entry. The effectiveness of the scheme is yet to be analysed, but a similar scheme has led to a significant reduction in drink-related incidents in other parts of the UK. A spokesman for Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group issued a reminder to any party-goers unlucky enough to require medical treatment to "choose the right healthcare service to meet their needs".
