IF you are looking for fun and nonsense this festive season then head to Exeter Phoenix. Local theatre group Quirk are once again performing a great Christmas show. Inspired by Lewis Carroll's classic nonsense poem, Jabberwocky it combines a great script, imaginative scenery and top acting. With a cast of just three the play transports the audience to a junior school on Beamish-on-the-Marsh where the two cooks, Doris and Doris, played brilliantly by Simon Hall and Ben Simpson are preparing Jabberwocky Pie for the annual Jabberwocky Day. Working for the school for the past 25 years the pair know every child and their food preferences. They cook good quality food made with local ingredients and are pleased they don't make a penny profit. But unbeknown to them the school headmistress (Marie Kelsall) is negotiating for new textbooks with seedy businessman Michele Gruel, who also insists she takes his pre-prepared school meals and sacks Doris and Doris. In her efforts to get the pair out the headmistress recalls the tale of the Jabberwocky and tries to scare them out of the kitchen. This is an hilarious play, beautifully performed by the three actors. There is everything you want from a festive offering, songs, jokes and audience participation. The imaginative way the kitchen is transformed into the headteacher's office and Doris and Doris create a character from pots and pans is a real treat. The show also includes projection, shadow puppetry and delivers a real magical experience. Don't miss it.
