Golf round up: Back nine birdies help Dennis Wright to win in Downes Crediton competition

Downes Crediton Dennis Wright won Monday's seniors' Stableford with a fine score of 40 points, which included back-to-back gross birdies on the 13th and 14th. Two others tied with Wright on 40 points – Ray Stevens took second place in a round that produced eight three-pointers in the space of nine holes, while Andrew Chandler was third. A Texas scramble with a shotgun start was the order of the day on Saturday, with John Cross and his grandchildren Shaun and Jack coming out on top. The Cross trio posted a fine nett 57, 13 under par, to win by two shots. After the event, the clubhouse held their presentation for the winners of various Christmas competitions. Exeter G&CC Andy Simey, Jenny Plummer and Judith Boyle scored 83 points to win the three-ball team competition. Second place went to Debbie More, Sue Gannon and Viv Worthington (82) and third to Carol Gregory, Chris Quantick and Wendy Parry (81). Carol Gregory continued her end-of-season success by topping the field in the greensomes Stableford with her partner Sheila Scott. They posted 42 points to finish ahead of Mary Fox and Kym Kortland (40) and Vera Anderson and Pam Jarrett (38) Chris Cantlon held off stiff competition from 50 other competitors to take Wednesday's senior ladies' nine-hole Christmas Cracker. Cantlon beat Gill Eveleigh on a countback after both scored 21 points. Patricia Gordon was third with 20. Okehampton Will Searle and Lewis Parry scored 44 points to win Division One of the fourball better ball competition. They sealed the victory on a countback from Bob and Marcia Collett in second place. In third were Andy Parry and Robin Webb with 41. They finished ahead of Kevin Pedrick and Jonathan Mansell, in fourth on a countback. Division Two was won by Kevin Harding and Roger Slack, with 44 points, with Mike Lang and Geoff Fidler second (43). Third place went to Graham Pengelly and Phil Hawking (42), with John and Steve Latham fourth on 40. Colin Beardwell, Nick Atkinson and Sue Williams scored 73 points to win the annual captain's drive-in. In second, with 72, were Steve Peake, Rod Jones and Sue Stanbury and third, with 71, were John Ripley, Ray Piper and Kevin Cornwall. Tiverton Roger Norton amassed 44 Stableford points to win the men's turkey trot at Tiverton on Saturday.
