AN Organ donor campaigner has celebrated his 2,742 sign-up as part of a national campaign to encourage people to register as organ donors this Christmas.
Exmouth town councillor, Steve Gazzard has been hosting sign-up events in the town since June 2012 soon after his daughter, mum-of-three Sarah Wright, 37, was put on the waiting list for a double lung transplant. She sadly died in the November, but her legacy has lived on.
As part of NHS Blood and Transplant's drive for people to continue signing up this winter, Cllr Gazzard hosted an event in the Strand with support from the town crier Roger Bourgein, deputy mayor, Councillor Maddie Chapman, local businesses, and post-16 students from Exmouth Community College.
"Unfortunately, Christmas won't be full of cheer for people on the waiting list, and three people continue to die a day waiting for an organ," said Cllr Gazzard.
Homemade cakes are being sought for Cllr Gazzard's sign-up stall and cake sale in aid of the British Lung Foundation at the Christmas Cracker event in the Strand on Saturday, December 6. Drop off from 10am.
