Exeter City moved up to eighth place in League Two as they were involved in another five-goal thriller away at Accrington Stanley.
The Grecians had won at the Crown Ground 3-2 last season and Friday night's result also came six days after they had come from two goals down to beat Shrewsbury at St James's Park.
City manager Paul Tisdale made one change to the side that had fought back from two goals down to beat Shrewsbury last time out.
Alex Nicholls, who re-joined the club on loan from Northampton Town on Thursday, was thrown straight into the starting line-up at the expense of Jimmy Keohane.
There was also a place on the bench for both Clinton Morrison and Ryan Harley, who have also joined the Grecians in the past eight days.
James Hamon kept his place in goal having made his league debut for the club on Saturday.
Hamon didn't having a meaningful save to make in the first half, but Stanley weren't without their chances and probably would have felt aggrieved to have been a goal down at the break.
Matt Crooks should have put the home side into the lead on 21 minutes when John O'Sullivan broke down the right and slid a ball to him on the edge of the six-yard box, but he flicked a shot wide of the left post.
Andrew Proctor also headed a good chance onto the roof of the net and there were appeals for a penalty when Sean Maguire knocked the ball into the arm of Matt Oakley.
At the other end of the pitch Tom Nichols had the ball in the back of the net on two occasions, but both times his efforts were ruled out by an early offside flag.
Other than that City only had two shots from Nicholls early on that looked close to troubling Jack Rose until Sercombe struck in the 45th minute.
Rose could do little about the City midfielder's effort though has he hit a powerful, but wonderfully controlled side-foot volley, past him from 12 yards out following a pin-point cross from Craig Woodman.
City then struck three minutes into the second half as David Noble played a short ball in to Nichols and he turned, ran towards the box and hit a fierce shot that flew past Rose and into the roof of the net.
Exeter seemed to have the match in control for the next 15 minutes as Stanley failed to create any openings.
But thanks to a speculative effort from O'Sullivan – that deflected past Hamon and into the right hand corner of the net – the home side got back into the game with 25 minutes to go.
City's Matt Grimes responded a minute late though, with a superbly struck free-kick – that flew into the top corner – to restore the Grecians two-goal lead. It was the talented midfielder's third goal direct from a free-kick this season.
The game swung back into the balance though on 73 minutes as the ball broke for substitute Seamus McCartan in the final third of the pitch and he advanced on the City goal unchallenged before placing a shot past Hamon from just inside the area.
Stanley piled on the pressure in the final 17 minutes of the match, forcing Tisdale to switch to a 4-5-1 formation and bring Arron Davies and Ryan Harley into the game from the bench.
The two substitutes almost combined to put City back into a two goal lead as Harley slipped the ball into Davies on the edge of the box. However, Davies low shot was well saved by Rose.
However it was not to matter as only a wayward Robn Atkinson header in the closing minutes threatened the City goal as the Grecians hung on for the points.
