Tom Nichols and Exeter City players relishing new attacking formation

Striker Tom Nichols says the Exeter City players are relishing the new attacking formation the club have adopted this season. The Grecians, who recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Morecambe on Sunday, have used a three-up-front tactic since the start of September and have scored in each of their last 11 games. The last time they failed to find the back of the net was on August 30, when they lost 1-0 at Northampton Town. That day they started with just two attackers in a 5-3-2 line-up. "Confidence is flowing through the team and we just know we are going to score every game," said Nichols, whose side face league leaders Luton Town at home on Saturday. "We get more bodies up the pitch now, which is the main difference. We play two up front and one behind or three up front, whereas last season we were playing one up front with one just behind. "Then we didn't know how we were going to score, but now we create chance after chance and play teams off the park. "We can mix it up also and I think that is a big difference as well. We can play it long into Graham (Cummins) and Dave (Wheeler) and score route one goals as well." Nichols' only frustration is that he has only started four games this campaign, with Jimmy Keohane, David Wheeler and Graham Cummins currently ahead of him in the pecking order. He is not happy sitting on the bench, but with the club in such great form he says there is little he can do about it apart from train hard and score when he goes on. That was something he managed to do on Sunday, netting the second goal of the game in the 89th minute. "That (scoring) is what I need to do really, because Graham is playing well," said Nichols. "You can go the manager and say 'why am I not playing?' when your team is not winning but, when we are flying like we have been and the strikers are playing well, you can't really do much about it. "I have just had to train hard and take my chance when I get it. I have come close to getting a goal on a couple of occasions, but thankfully on Sunday it went in." Nichols added that sitting on the bench wasn't the worst place to be with the way City have been playing recently. "You don't like being on the bench, but it is not the worst thing in the world when you get to watch football like we have been playing," he said. "It is joy to watch sometimes, especially when we play like we did at Morecambe. David Wheeler's chance that has brought a worldy save out the keeper – you won't see many teams doing that in this league. "We have got a good blend of delivering the ball forward quickly and playing at the same time. Our experienced lads are very good at the back in finding teammates and finding space."
