OPINION: Tiverton Town lacking in striking options?

Tiverton Town's problems in front of goal suddenly seem to be easing after both Jamie Mudge and Owen Howe scored in Saturday's 2-0 win over Wantage Town. With converting chances having been an Achilles heel for the Yellows in recent weeks, it was a relief for Martyn Rogers to see both his strikers hit the target, with Mudge's a particularly emphatic finish. Unfortunately for Tivvy, problems do remain, with news emerging last week that striker Khaled Badavi had sustained a broken foot. That looks likely to rule him out for at least a month, and is a particular blow given the threadbare nature of Rogers' squad. Badavi has not been a regular starter since his arrival over the summer, with Rogers preferring to exploit his pace by using him as an impact substitute. His absence is unlikely to come as a huge blow to Tiverton's ambitions this season, but it will stretch their resources even further. That would not have been a problem at the start of the season, but Rogers' striking options are rather thinner on the ground than they were a few months ago. Jules Emati-Emati has been away on family business in Spain for much of the season, although apparently he is now becoming involved again in the set-up at Ladysmead. His return can not come too soon for Rogers given Badavi's injury. Some have suggested that Emati-Emati's hold-up play could bring the best out of Howe, particularly considering that both Howe and Mudge are very much classic No. 9s rather than second strikers. Jesse Howe, Rogers' other striking option at the start of the season, turned out for Cullompton Rangers in their Walter C Parson Cup defeat to Exeter University on Saturday. That came as a slight surprise as youth product Luke Mortimer was the only recognised forward on the bench. Quite how long Jesse Howe will play at Cully remains to be seen but, with Badavi out and Emati-Emati presumably short on match fitness, Rogers needs all the strikers he can lay his hands on. The only other option would be to go out and bring in another forward. Rogers has already signed Matt Bye since the start of the season, possibly hinting that more cash is available in the playing budget than first suspected. Nevertheless, the spending power of the club is a long way from the ostentatious days of John Clarkson last season, and proven goal-scorers do not come cheap. All things considered, the Yellows once again find themselves in a position where they could struggle for goals if one of Owen Howe or Mudge is out of action or out of form.
