One of Gilbert and Sullivan's most celebrated works will be brought to the stage this month by the St David's Players.

The Exeter group will perform the comic opera Ruddigore at the Barnfield Theatre from October 14 to 18.

Set in the seaside resort of Rederring, the story contains everything including heroes, villains, ghosts and even professional bridesmaids.

The Players, who specialise in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, was formed late in 1969 by members of the choir of St David's Church with the aim of raising funds for the Biafran crisis.

The first production – Patience, in 1970 – was such a success it was decided to form a permanent company.

The Players have raised thousands of pounds over the years with their performances. Last year's production of The Mikado raised £2,396.89 for the cancer charity, Force. This year the society is supporting St Loye's Foundation's Positive Opportunities Scheme.

It provides support for people with autistic-spectrum conditions who are looking for employment, training or meaningful activities in the Exeter and East Devon area.

Ruddigore, or The Witch's Curse (to give it its full name), was first performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company at the Savoy Theatre in London on January 22, 1887.

This version will be directed by Jane May and the musical director is Mark Perry.

It is the 10th production directed by Jane and the work has a special place for her.

"My first major role for the society was the part of Mad Margaret in Ruddigore in 1991," she said.

"Out of all the various Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, it remains my favourite."

Taking place in a late 19th-century seaside resort, the stage setting will include Victorian bathing machines and a picture frame from which a collection of ghostly ancestors will step forth.

Ruddigore will play at the Barnfield Theatre from tomorrow (October 14) to Saturday, at 7.30pm, with a matinee on the Saturday. Ticket details on 01392 271808 or visit: www.stdavidsplayers.co.uk
