COFFEE looks set to come to the fore at Exeter Cathedral.

At the moment the cafe is somewhar tucked away on the south side of Cathedral.

However the cathedral authorities are now seeking planning permission for a temporary cafe kiosk to be erected by the north door which would mean that it would face out onto Cathedral Green.

Alison Davenport, the managing director of Exeter Cathedral, said: "We are continuing to refine our plans to uncover the Roman Baths and build a new visitor centre on the Green and we hope to put in a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund later this year.

"Later phases of the overall Cloisters Plus programme will involve the re-development of the cloister area, and we think that this may cause some disruption to our existing cafe. "During this period, we need to be able to continue to offer hospitality to our visitors and regular customers, so in advance of the work taking place we are looking at putting in a small, temporary structure on the north Side of the cathedral to serve teas, coffees and light snacks."

The cathedral authorities are asking the city council for planning permission for a year initially so that they can assess the level of trade it will attract.
