The head of West Exe School in Exeter is leaving at Christmas, it has been announced today. Headteacher Vicki Carah is moving to France with her family to start a new career. Deputy head Rick Jolley will take over as acting head for the spring term, Devon County Council said. Chair of governors Allan Hart said: "Mrs Carah has provided an exceptional lead for the school over the last few years, creating a happy, inclusive and unified school and one now firmly in touch with the local community. She oversaw the school's best ever examination results. "While we are sorry to see her go, we wish her every success and happiness with her move to France." Mr Hart said the governors had already begun the process to recruit a new headteacher who would be in place for the summer term. He added: "Mr Jolley, the senior leadership team and the rest of the staff will ensure that the school maintains its commitment to providing a safe and vibrant school which continues to focus on effective and engaging teaching and learning."

A letter on the school's website from Mr Hart read:

Dear Parent/Carer

I regret to announce that Mrs Vicki Carah will be leaving her post of Headteacher at West Exe School and will be departing at the end of the Autumn term. She has taken the difficult personal decision to leave the school in order to move to France to establish a new career and home with her family. Mrs Carah has provided an exceptional lead for the school over the last few years, creating a happy, inclusive, and unified school, and one now firmly in touch with the local community. She oversaw the school's best ever examination results, and whilst of course we are sorry to see her go, we wish her every success and happiness with her move to France. The Governing Body of the school has acted quickly to begin the process of appointing a new Headteacher who will be in place for the start of the Summer term. In the meantime we have asked Mr Jolley, currently Deputy Head at the school, to become Acting Headteacher for the Spring term. Mr Jolley, the Senior Leadership Team, and the rest of the staff will ensure that West Exe School maintains its commitment to providing a safe and vibrant school which continues to focus on effective and engaging teaching and learning.
