A WORLD champion Brazilian Jui Jitsu champion has spent time with Royal Marines at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone in the midst of their epic 350-hour fundraising marathon bid. Braulio de Oliveira Estima, 34, a third degree black belt from Recife, Brazil, led a coaching session on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 24, before defeating a succession of opponents in back-to-back bouts. On September 15, marines from all commando units embarked on their mammoth 14-and-a-half day challenge to mark the 350th anniversary of the Corps. The feat involves two marines on the mat at a time, 24 hours a day until the time is up. Funds raised will go to the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. Royal Marines are taught unarmed close quarters combat in order to allow them to deal with situations where they may have to restrain or detain people using the minimum amount of appropriate force. The Royal Marines Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association was formed last year and already has more than 170 members. "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a combat sport," said Colour Sergeant Sam Sheriff, 35, who works in Parker Hall, the physical rehabilitation centre at the training base." The Colour Sergeant became interested in the sport on his Physical Trainers Instructors course. He added: "You start standing up and the idea is to take your opponent down, but unlike Judo where at that stage the competition is over, in Brazilian Jui Jitsu, the idea is to get your opponent to submit, by either a joint hold or lock or a choke or strangle."
