CYCLISTS are being urged to ensure they are safe on the roads after new figures revealed there has been a 27 per cent increase of cyclists being seriously injured or killed on Devon roads.
Following on from the recent Devon County Council report, the East and Mid Devon Community Safety Partnership want cyclists to make sure they can be seen during both the daytime and night time hours.
At a recent meeting of the Partnership's Exmouth Local Action Group, members agreed with Exmouth town councillor Steve Gazzard that cyclists need to wear reflective clothing and helmets at all times and in addition need bright lights on their bikes during the hours of darkness.
Police Inspector Antonia Weeks, said: "It's a small price to pay to save your own or someone else's life. Cycling without lights is against the law and if an accident is caused as a result of not having lights we will look to prosecute."
