Martyn Rogers says hard work is key to avoiding away-day blues for Tiverton Town

Tiverton Town can come away with victories from their string of tough away assignments providing they maintain their high workrate in games. That is according to Tivvy manager Martyn Rogers, who takes his side to Wimborne Town on Saturday. The trip to Dorset is the Yellows' third away game in a row, and comes in the middle of a block of six matches of which five are away from Ladysmead. Rogers' men have lost their last two – both by a 1-0 scoreline – at AFC Totton on Saturday and Bideford a week ago on Tuesday in an FA Cup replay. But he is confident results will turn provided they keep their application levels high. "To be fair, we have a run of away games so that will make it difficult for us," Rogers conceded. "Away games are never easy and we will have to carry on working hard and plugging away as we are at the moment. "Having said that, if we keep working as hard, I am sure we will come good and pick up some good results." An own-goal by debutant Matt Bye condemned Tiverton Town at AFC Totton on Saturday. James Jennings' 74th-minute effort glanced off Bye's hip before going in – on a day when Yellows captain James Richards saw red for two bookable offences. Although Tivvy did not create too many chances, they had one or two glimpses at goal from which they could well have pinched a leveller. And Rogers admitted that his side's inability to convert just one of their opportunities proved costly on the day. "To be fair, I thought we deserved something out of the game," he said. "We created a few quality chances and we haven't taken them," he said. "I think that is obviously the cause of us losing the game. Jimmy Hinds had a point-blank header which was saved by the keeper. "We had a free-kick from James Richards which the keeper has parried. The rebound came out to Dan Western and he hit it at an open goal, but he hit I into the ground and it hit the crossbar. That was a bit of a blow. "James Mudge also ran onto a through-ball from Matt Bye and I thought he was going to go round the keeper. Instead, he hit it first time and it went past the keeper and the post too." Rogers also absolved debutant Bye of any blame for the goal which decided the game, although he conceded it was the new signing who had supplied the vital touch. Bye has enjoyed two previous spells at Ladysmead – from 2007 to 2008, and 2009 to 2010, with a brief stay at Truro City in between – making 32 Tivvy appearances in that time. And Rogers went on to explain that it was the influence of the midfielder both on and off the pitch which led him to re-signing Bye for a third stint at Ladysmead. "He (Bye) played for me before when he was a bit younger so I do know him and he will be a good lad for us both on and off the pitch," said Rogers. "Matty is an excellent player that has played at our level and above. "He is a big talker on the pitch and I think that will be very important for us this season with quite a young central midfield. He has a great attitude and already knows quite a few of our players, so that will help everyone."
