Police in Devon and Cornwall were called out to nearly 500 alcohol related incidents on Saturday night, with 59 people taken into custody. The figures were revealed on the second night of the force's #alcoholharm tweetathon, a social media experiment designed to highlight the toll of booze related disorder on the emergency services and the harm caused to drinkers and others. It followed Friday night's tally of 43 people in custody and 374 incidents. Incidents reported by the police on Twitter on Saturday night included a domestic assault on a woman in Exmouth, a car crash involving a suspected drink driver in Exeter, and arrests for being drunk and disorderly in the city. Saturday night's mayhem - including 493 recorded incidents - brought the total number of people taken into custody across the force area this weekend after alcohol related disorder to 102. Police responded to a total of 867 incidents between 8pm and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights, ranging from complaints of anti-social behaviour and noise to road traffic accidents and assaults. Summing up the evening's events, Devon and Cornwall Police tweeted: "Before we say good night, we hope you can see dealing w/ #alcoholharm at weekends has a significant impact on communities & police resources". Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has said: "Tackling alcohol-related crime is one of my top priorities."
