Youngsters have been 'transported' from Exeter to Hawaii for a special holiday, without even needing to board a plane. More than 60 primary school-age children are attending Alfie's Hawaiian Holiday Club at Riverside Church near the city centre from August 4-8. Each morning they are taking part in a variety of activities – from scuba-diving to singing, and from venturing across shark-infested waters to eating tasty snacks. Pastor Gareth Jenkins said: "All the activities point back to the theme of the week – living life to the full – and the sheer volume of laughter, noise and fun suggests that the children are doing just that!" The week is being led by Riverside Pastors Rosie and Gareth as well as a team of volunteers and mascot Alfie AllStar. Pastor Colette Poulson said: "We've put a lot of time and effort into transforming the whole church into a sea of bright colours, because we want the best for the children. "We are teaching them about God: he is their helper, guide, instructor and friend. It's mostly about having fun and laughter and living life to the full, which is what we believe God offers us. It's also about building relationships in the community. We want to make a difference and make memories." The Holiday Club – that is in its fourth year – culminates in a special event for the children and their parents at the church on Friday evening.
