Dozens of people paused to reflect on the mounting death toll in Gaza at a peace vigil in Exeter. The gathering in Bedford Street, Princesshay, on Saturday afternoon saw the names of children killed during the current conflict read out. It came amid growing international outrage at the number of civilians killed during the Israeli military's ongoing offensive against Hamas militants firing rockets into Israel. According to Gaza's health ministry, 1,740 Palestinians have been killed and 9,080 injured since the conflict began more than three weeks ago. The UN estimates that more than 60 per cent of Palestinians who have died were civilians. It has also warned of a "health disaster of widespread proportions" unfolding in Gaza. A total of 66 Israelis have died in the conflict, all but two of them soldiers. A Thai worker in Israel also died. The demonstration in Exeter came just hours before at least 10 people died in a missile strike near a UN-run school in Rafah where thousands of displaced Palestinians had been sheltering.
