Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale said the punishment handed down to defender Danny Coles sent out a clear and simple message from the club.
Coles was stripped of the captaincy, placed on the transfer list and fined two weeks' wages after he sent an abusive message to a supporter on Twitter who mocked his performances for the St James's Park club.
The decision was made following an internal investigation at the club and Tisdale said he thought the decision was fair.
At his weekly press conference he also spoke about the club's trip to Brazil, the possibility of bringing in new players and the difficulty of working under a transfer embargo.
