A former Plymouth Argyle youth player died after he sustained a serious wound to the neck which may have been caused by glass, it has been revealed today.
Promising footballer Alex Peguero Sosa, 17, was injured early Sunday in what police described as an "altercation". He was taken to Derriford Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A 22-year-old man from Kingsbridge was arrested at 6.30pm yesterday on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice, Devon and Cornwall police revealed.
He remains in custody at Torquay police station.
A 42-year-old man also remains in custody at Torquay police station.
Alex Peguero Sosa was a student in the sixth form at Kingsbridge Community College.
Alex's father Alexis today paid tribute to his son.
He said: "So cruelly some selfish person took the life of my handsome son.
"I love you son with all my heart forever your heartbroken dad."
"We are very saddened to hear of Alex's death," an Argyle spokesman said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as we share their grief.
"It would not be appropriate to say any more at this time as the police investigation goes on."
Superintendent Chris Eastwood said yesterday: "This is a very difficult time for all concerned and our deepest sympathy goes out to Alex's family and friends. Police are working closely with his family to provide emotional support following this tragic incident.
"We are working in partnership with the college to support students and staff and local officers will be at the school in the next few days to provide reassurance and assistance at this very sad time.
"The community is understandably in shock and coming to terms with this incident which is very rare in Kingsbridge.
Neighbourhood officers will be conducting reassurance patrols in the town over the coming days to support the local community."
Police and ambulance crews were called to Prince of Wales Road at 2.20am on Sunday 6 July following reports that the teenager had been injured during an altercation involving people at the taxi rank.
On arrival they found Alex Peguero Sosa had sustained serious injuries.
Members of the public went to the aid of the boy and commenced CPR before paramedics arrived. He was taken to Derriford Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Police appealed for witnesses or anybody with information to call 101, quoting log number 194 of July 6.
