More than 60 trainee construction apprentices from across Devon took part in an assessment event hoping to be named the best in the trade and go on to secure a work experience placement.
The two day assessment event was held at South West Highways' Training Centre in Rockbeare.
The Training Centre has National Skills Academy status which, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), enables trainees to get comprehensive onsite support and guidance.
Trainees are all taking part in practical assessments to showcase their skills in trades such as block paving.
The six best trainees will be offered a work experience placement with South West Highways with the possibility of a full time apprenticeship and other competitors may also be in with a chance of joining local construction companies AM Highways, KJ Thulborns, KM courtier Ltd, and Roadform Civil Engineering Co.Ltd who are all attending to keep an eye out for new talent.
Anna Cooper, Project Skills Co-ordinator from South West Highways, said: "We're delighted to be holding this assessment event to bring the brightest of Devon's apprentices together and to offer them a fantastic opportunity to come and work for us.
"South West Highways is committed to helping to maintain and develop the region's infrastructure and apprenticeships are a great way to get local people trained up in a trade and help to build their communities."
Janette Welton-Pai, CITB's Sector Strategy Manager for the South West region added: "This two day event will highlight how important training is and we're pleased it's coming to one of our National Construction Colleges.
"Having 60 trainees taking part in practical tasks will give them the chance to really showcase their skills and it's even better that long term opportunities are available, be it through South West Highways or other local construction companies."
