Exeter city council is to "investigate" weeds which local residents say are spoiling the entrance to St Nicholas Priory.
The problem was first highlighted by resident Annette Setterfield whose home overlooks the priory.
Mrs Setterfield said: "The gardens there are a disgrace to this city.
"It is approached via the Mint or Frienhay Street. Through the year the Red Coat Guides take groups around this area of historic value to the city; I wonder what they must think.
"It is bad enough walking up two streets that are very dirty with rubbish, weeds etc littering the walkway to then turn into the gardens!"
A spokesman for the city council said: "We were unaware of the problem so are grateful that it has been brought to our attention and will now investigate."
The news comes as residents are being encouraged to help with the weed problem as judging for Exeter's entry in the Britain in Bloom competition is to start next month.
Christine Fraser, from Exeter Parks Watch, said: "We're thrilled that Exeter is back in Britain in Bloom and delighted that Exeter City Council is doing everything it can to present the city at its very best.
"Unfortunately we left with the problem of the weeds and this is where everyone in the community can do a little bit, weeding outside your home can make a terrific difference."
