EXETER College is short of classrooms. As it waits for the refurbishment of National House in Queen Street to be completed it is set to welcome an increased number of students in this year's autumn term.

Its solution is to erect temporary classrooms on two sites – its Howell Road car park and at its playing fields in Exwick. It has applied to the city council for planning permission for eight temporary classrooms on the Howell Road car park and says that a further three temporary classrooms at the Exwick site will be the subject of a subsequent planning application. If given planning permission the eight classrooms will be erected during late August this year and will be taken down during July 2015. This will be followed with a reinstatement programme to return the site to its original form. Steve Strang, head of estates at Exeter College said: "We have applied for planning permission for temporary classrooms for one year at two sites since we are refurbishing National House which currently accommodates a small number of our student classes," said "Whilst this refurbishment takes place we will be teaching these students in temporary classes on our Hele Road site and have applied for permission for additional temporary accommodation at the new Exwick Sports Pavilion to support sports students. The temporary classrooms will continue to facilitate our growth, partly as a consequence of our recent outstanding inspection and will impact on less than 2per cent of our student population for one year."
