A Devon MP opened Prime Minister Question's this week by asking David Cameron to set out the action the UK Government are taking to assist in the rescue of 270 school girls kidnapped by Islamist Boko Haram militants. Central Devon MP Mel Stride, himself a proud father of three daughters, said the only crime these girls had committed was to "aspire to receive an education" and urged the Government to do whatever it could to help ensure their release.
The Prime Minister responded by calling the kidnapping "an act of pure evil" and assured the House that Britain "stands ready to provide whatever assistance we can". He also emphasised the role the UK continues to play in Nigeria where British aid is helping to educate 800,000 children including 600,000 girls.
The Prime Minister also described the kidnapping as having "united the planet" against Islamic extremists who are "against education, against progress, against equality" and said "we must fight them and take them on wherever they are".
